Benefits of volunteering are wide. One of the biggest ones is personal satisfaction, but personal satisfaction cannot feed your hungry stomach and pay the bills. Are you interested in doing good while your wallet do not have to bleed? Everybody who did something just for passion, not hard cash, early realised that it is not kinda possible to
survive thrive and maintain their economical status. What if your activity cannot generate any income to cover your time?
You are doomed.
Well, not really seriously. I would like to share some experience up in here.
I live in relatively small city, where the labour market have been kinda limited to tech industry jobs – mechanical turks. To be honest, I do not prefer to spend 8 to 12 hours in a factory day after day for the rest of my life. When I’ve grow up, internet has come.
Have to skip the boring part now. Simply put, as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote,
“A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us. To live is to be slowly born.”
Is it possible to be paid volunteer?
Everybody knows that volunteering is for free. But duh, what if somebody just wants to do something meaningful and there is no option how to pay the bills? Food, Culture, Living, ….
Sell your skills with added value
How you can grow into volunteer with earned income in reasonable time? Do not hesitate and start using your computer and internet today. The internet volunteering does have really big advantage in speed and economy of provided work. Time effectivity of microvolunteering jobs is much more larger than time effectivity of physical volunteering where you need to spend a lot of time on commuting etc. The problem everybody knows, excluding digital commuters.
Provide your service to nonprofits
You do not have to learn new and complicated things to start. The secret is how-to. Just explore the world of nonprofit’s needs – they are very similar to business needs in fact. The crux is that many nonprofits easily do not have resources to perform some tasks. If you can spend 5 minutes to 1 hour on volunteering, you can make a big difference, even if the time is very limited.
- Graphic works
- Translations, copywriting
- Legal, financial and other consultations
- And many more
Show Your Skills
Build up number of microtasks for nonprofits you choose, nurture contacts and provide them with value as like as anytime in past – is it your personal commitment to give back or you are just passionate about doing good? Do it now and do it well.
- Build your arsenal you can provide to nonprofits
- Customize your arsenal to be attractive for businesses
- Sell your skills for instance on Fiverr where yours offer is the advertised one, not a buyers one.
- Show the real results of your microvolunteering and get paid for same skills
- Now you can find balance between paid and volunteering work
Transform your practice into socially responsible job
The fun begin here. Take the opportunity and start building your own personal brand. Build up a website, do even more good and you will get some honor back. Thats it! People from nonprofit sector who realize the value of your time are very grateful and actually, they will make you happy about what are you doing. It is called meaningful work. Social Entepreneur is a buzzword, point of view, occupation, dream and many other things.
I am not here to put down just another social entrepreneur definition. The reason is that everybody needs to read a lot and feel a lot of things before (s)he can say its own definition. I am not so experienced to be eligible for it. But what I would to say is that social entrepreneur does not have to follow one and only one cause.
Why? Because of sustainability of yours job position.
What happens if your cause can not generate funds to cover staff early enough? What happens if your crowdsourcing fails? What happens if long-term obstacle appear? Your cause and thus your whole social entrepreneurs plan is doomed. Now, seriously. Game over, insert coin. Play again.
Be Your Own Boss – Volunteer and get paid by professionals
Everytime, you need to offer something valuable to nonprofits. It is the added value of your manpower, your difference, something what makes you more acceptable by socially-conscious people.
Your business cannot be separated from the social mission. Toms Shoes, for example, donates a pair of shoes for every pair sold. The social impact is intrinsically tied to the business proposition; without it, Toms is just another shoe company.
Use money earned on selling your work to transform your job position into social entrepreneurism – make yourself independent contractor, purchase turnkey business, build up your authority with related blogposts, offer low-upkeep services and products to private sector and do not hesitate to use half of your income to pay time for volunteering.
- Run a website hosting reseller
- Run mobile apps service
- Sell Fundraising Products
- Sell a book with your knowledge
- Get a digital product or any profitable whitelabel business opportunity
This way you will be able to spend more of your real time on your passionate causes and less time with your business clients. Time for your personal growth, family and friends.
Because of you, somebody will have better life.
At this moment, I can personally pay all my bills and sales are not rapidly, but constantly growing. Thank you for this opportunity to work, so far, on more than 150 projects – for nonprofits as like as for businesses who are serious about their social impact.
So, why to volunteer with earned income?
The more good you will do, the more you will get back. You will be able to do good without struggles about financial part of your life. And remember – do not spend all of your money on profaneness – build up your arsenal of weapons for good.
Satisfy your business customers, show them the value they help to provide for nonprofits and be sure that they will be willing to giveaway you some coffee credit for even more good.
You do not have to found new organization to have an impact on the world. But you should be founder of yours career.

Benefits of Volunteering are just awesome
Now you see that benefits of volunteering are not limited “only” to your personal satisfaction. You can even make your living if you are able to fuse your skills, your passion to do something meaningful and portion of healthy self-promotion. And the best part is that you do not have to invent something new – just incorporate piece of will to your current offerings.
